What is a Stoic anyway?
A Stoic is anyone who takes life on life's terms, without making excuses or wishing things were different, instead making the best of any situation. We are NOT unfeeling robots, but real people striving to live a great life where Virtue is valued above all else, trusting that this mindset will let us be of maximum service to others; to move forward, without guilt, shame or remorse, to the next indicated best action.
The philosopher Nassim Taleb sums it up beautifully "a Stoic is someone who transforms fear into prudence, pain into transformation, mistakes into initiation, and desire into undertaking."
In a similar way, we look at living out the Serenity Prayer:
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The Courage to change the things I can,
And the Wisdom to know the difference"
ABOUT ME
My name is Sean, I'm a lifelong resident of South King County, currently residing near Ravensdale. My wife Karen and I were married in 1994, we have one adult son, and are members at Light of Life Lutheran Church in Covington. My interest in Stoicism (and philosophy in general) has grown over the past several years. I could not find an already established local group of adherents, so I started this site and the Stoic Virtues Book club in hopes of building a community of individuals wanting to learn and share their wisdom with others. Other interests of mine include traveling the country watching motorsports events, salmon fishing (not necessarily catching) and display fireworks. You will notice (and have probably already garnered) that website developer is NOT on my lists of interests, please be patient, or offer your services if so inclined.
